If I could give this book a 10 I would. this was absolutely superb. It has everything you could want in an historical fiction work. This is an imaginative plot about a conspiracy which spans 60 years. While you may correctly guess the conspirators' ultimate aim, getting there is superbly done. The author brings to life the 20's in the context of a story that begins during the Civil War. The gross misconduct and corruption of the Harding administration, especially its Justice department, are exceptionally well depicted. The racial strife of the times, the power of the KKK at its height, and the dogged pursuit of a southern G-man dedicated to finding justice, all combine to deliver a knock out punch of a story and conclusion. There is even a romantic sub plot that is tastefully done and is not merely a throw in for romance fans; there is substance to their relationship I can't imagine why this isn't a best selling novel. Well written, extremely few grammatical errors, (which seems uncommon in so many books). I enjoyed the suspense even though the main character was kind of naive to catch on to all the corruption around him. The good guys were likeable and the in between guys kept you wondering what you thought of them and of course the bad guys were simply awful. I looked forward to every chance I had to sit down with this book and let myself be taken in by the story. I definitely recommend this book.
This is an exciting and historically accurate novel about events occurring at the battle of Gettysburg and the subsequent murders of some of the survivors of the battle. The characters, both invented by the author and real, are intertwinned in many ways which makes the story even more interesting. In addition, the story chronicles the the formative period of what is now the FBI and the beginnings of the Ku Klux Klan. I've actually read this book twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it both times! It's a great read and I highly recommend it. I am anxiously awaiting the next book from Dr. Ashby.
Tim researched the information and used it very effectively in this work of fiction intertwined with real events and made it a believeable story. One who's characters are involved in the countries security and use unthinkable ways to get information first and use it against one another and other security departments all to prove they are better.Reminds one of Watergate .Some of the people portrayed are taken from from family members and places one can visit and in one instance when Lindbergh is brought into the story you say "but who else" .One might be able to guess the main plot and the out come while reading but it is history and it's better we should know what went on in the country and the tactices used to get information . Very good reading !
Devil's Den. As a Civil War enthusiast, Mr. Ashby has my attention. I'm a Baltimore-originating, Confederate-descendant, who found Timothy Ashby's novel one of the most luminous novels I have read in a very long time.
Bravo! From the first 'grab' sentence, and throughout the twists and turns, this is one damned good read. Why? Because of the simple fundamentals of good writing, good editing, good structure, design. It's a solid, commendable, and worthy novel.
I hope that Mr. Ashby does damned fine with this title. He deserves it!
Nothing is as it seems. The "War to end all wars" didn't, and the "Civil war" wasn't. This theme plays out in a variety of ways in this well-written page-turner. The fictional characters are quite well drawn and developed ... and the historical characters are true to their real natures (as revealed in "real" histories). The mystery that drives the plot has many unexpected twists and turns that make the book hard to put down. The history that provides the medium for the plot was well researched and well presented. I thought that I had known a moderate amount about the Civil War and its legacy for the early 20th century; and I thought that I had known a moderate amount about WWI and its aftermath and about the US government of the 1920s. But, I learned a tremendous amount about all of these in this book. I really hope to see more from this author in the very near future.
Wow just wow! I downloaded The Devils Den by Timothy Ashby, in November or December and, I just got to it. What an unbelievably great book. If you just like history, you'll want to read this, if you love mysteries, or political thrillers, you'll want to read this. If you love historical fiction, you'll want to read this book. It has it all. I am astounded by the amount of research that must have gone into the writing of this book. This is a beautifully crafted story, one that will leave you excited for the next book, sit back and enjoy the ride.
It starts out just weeks before the 60th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, an old Union soldier is found murdered in the part of the battlefield park know as the Devil's Den. Under the excuse, that Gettysburg is a National Park, the Bureau of Investigation takes over the case. Enter Seth Armitage, an earnest and honest young investigator, is sent out to investigate the murder of an old soldier. When ordered to answer only to Director William Brooks of the BI, Seth realizes that this is no regular murder investigation.
Washington under the Harding administration was a hot bed of corruption, skullduggery, and vice. J. Edgar Hoover the 29 year old assistant director to the BI, (as it was called then) was already amassing his files on the movers and shakers in the country. Just waiting for his chance to assume power.
But this is the story of Seth, and his dogged determination to find out who killed the old soldier, and who is now killing others to prevent discovery but of what? Just how high up does this go? I am so excited that there is another book in the works "In Shadowland." I love the romance in the story it is refreshing. It is very well written and I flew through it. An absolute 5 star read!
